Parenting the Love and Logic Way®
A 6-week, in-person parenting class for Kansas City and Overland Park parents who are ready to end the power struggles, stop the daily arguing, and raise kids who are more responsible, respectful, and self-directed, without relying on yelling, threats, or bribery to get there.
This class is for parents only. Children do not attend any session. Every class is designed as a space for you to learn, ask questions, and practice new skills alongside other parents.
Built on Love and Logic, an internationally recognized, evidence-based approach to parenting trusted by families and educators around the world.
What Is Parenting the Love and Logic Way®?
If your days feel like a constant negotiation (the arguing over homework, the back-talk at bedtime, the begging that turns into bribery just to get out the door), you are not doing anything wrong, and you are not alone.
Most parents reach a point where the strategies that used to work stop working, and it starts to feel like nothing does. Parenting the Love and Logic Way® is a 6-week, once-weekly, 2-hour group class for parents, built on the Love and Logic approach: a practical, evidence-based, internationally recognized parenting framework used by families and schools for decades. This is not therapy, and it is not a support group. It is a skills-based class: each week, you leave with specific language and techniques you can start using with your kids that same day.
The class is for parents only; children do not attend any session. This is a newly offered, dedicated course at Armstrong Family Counseling, created for parents who want a calmer home and kids who are genuinely more responsible, not just more compliant. If you're also exploring what ongoing support could look like for your family, take a look at our parenting counseling and classes to see the full range of ways we work with parents.
Our Approach
Love and Logic isn't a script or a set of rules to memorize. It's a mindset shift in how you respond to your child, moment by moment. Here's what that looks like in practice:
Enforceable Statements, not commands
Instead of issuing directives your child can ignore or fight, you learn to describe what you will do or allow: language that puts the control back in your hands without a single raised voice.
Consequences delivered with empathy
Kids learn best from natural and logical consequences when those consequences are paired with genuine warmth and understanding, not anger or lectures. Empathy first, consequence second: that order matters.
Shared control through structured choices
Offering your child real, appropriate choices meets their basic need to feel some control over their own life, which dramatically reduces the urge to fight you for it.
Calm over reactive
You'll learn how to stay grounded when your child is upset, escalating, or pushing every button you have, because a calm parent is a powerful parent, and reactivity is often what fuels the struggle in the first place.
Kids learn to own their problems
Rather than swooping in to fix every difficulty, you'll learn how to guide your child toward solving their own problems, building the kind of confidence and resilience that lasts well beyond childhood.
These five principles form the backbone of the course, and over six weeks, you'll build them into concrete, everyday tools, starting with the very first class.
6 Weeks, 6 Skills
Each session builds on the last, moving you from your very first tools for calming the daily arguments to a complete framework for raising a more responsible, resilient kid. Select a week to see what it covers.
Putting an End to Arguing, Back-Talk, and Begging
Arguing, back-talk, and begging can feel like small, everyday annoyances, but left unaddressed, they tend to grow into bigger problems as kids get older. This first session starts with a core mindset shift: the mistakes and pushback your child brings you today are actually low-stakes opportunities for them to learn, while the stakes are still small and manageable. From there, you'll learn specific, calm language for stepping out of an argument the moment it starts, instead of getting pulled into a back-and-forth that leaves everyone frustrated and nobody heard.
Teaching Responsibility Without Losing Their Love
Many parents want their kids to be more responsible, but without realizing it, they end up preventing the very mistakes and consequences that build responsibility in the first place. This session explores how those well-intentioned rescues happen and how to step back so consequences can do the teaching. You'll also learn how to stay warm, connected, and emotionally steady even when your child's behavior is genuinely upsetting, because holding a limit and staying loving are not opposites, and this class shows you how to do both at once.
Setting Limits Without Waging War
This week replaces commands and threats ("you need to," "you'd better," "or else") with Enforceable Statements: language that describes what you, the parent, will do or allow, rather than what your child is required to do. You'll see how this shift plays out in three of the most common daily flashpoints (mealtime, homework, and allowance), and you'll practice brief, low-pressure moments of applying a new limit before it takes full effect, so both you and your child feel prepared rather than ambushed.
Avoiding Power Struggles
Feeling some sense of control over their own life is a basic emotional need for children, just as it is for adults, and when that need goes unmet, power struggles are often the result. This session teaches you how to share appropriate control with your child through structured choices that still keep you firmly in charge. You'll also learn clear guidelines for when offering a choice genuinely helps de-escalate a moment, and when it's better avoided altogether, so choices become a tool you use with intention rather than a reflex.
Guiding Kids to Own and Solve Their Own Problems
Rather than stepping in to solve every difficulty your child faces, this session teaches a five-step framework for walking them through solving it themselves. You'll practice applying this framework to real situations parents bring up most often, including bullying, teasing, and conflicts with teachers, building your child's confidence that they can handle hard things. You'll also learn strategies for those moments when a child shuts down and won't engage, so you have a plan even when the conversation doesn't go as expected.
Teaching Kids to Complete Chores Without Reminders and Without Pay
In this final session, you'll learn why chores are about far more than a tidy house: they're directly connected to a child's sense of responsibility, self-esteem, and even academic motivation. You'll learn the practice of "positive noticing" to reinforce effort and build genuine family teamwork, along with a full reframe of chores as a meaningful contribution to the household rather than something that requires nagging, bribery, or payment to get done.
